Adaptive field hockey brings people together through the power of play.

It’s a version of the game designed for athletes with developmental and intellectual disabilities, where connection, teamwork, and inclusion matter more than competition. Players learn, grow, and celebrate achievements side by side—showing that when everyone has the chance to take the field, the whole community wins.

There are no disability qualifications for domestic All Starz events.  Everyone is welcome to play.  International events and qualifiers may have specific qualifications per event.

Expanding access to the game

Pathways to Play for All Abilities

For many athletes with diverse abilities, the connection and camaraderie of team sports haven’t always been accessible. All Starz Adaptive Field Hockey is changing that — opening doors to play, belong, and compete through USA Field Hockey’s All Starz programs.

Your local State Chapter or All Starz team can be your starting point. They offer adaptive clinics, training sessions, and events for athletes of all abilities, all within a supportive, inclusive community. If there isn’t a team near you yet, you can also connect with USA Field Hockey to get involved or explore starting one.

All Starz programs are part of a growing network of official USA Field Hockey partner organizations, led by trained coaches and designed to create safe, fun, development-focused environments. Being part of All Starz can also open a pathway to FIH Para Hockey ID — the international system that recognizes adaptive athletes with intellectual disabilities and connects players to higher-level opportunities in the global para-hockey community.

Whether you’re already playing or just taking your first steps, your chapter leadership team is here to help you get connected and be part of the movement: field hockey for every body.

How to Support an All Starz Athlete

All Starz thrives on the energy, love, and encouragement you bring. Your support goes far beyond the sidelines — you’re helping build inclusion, sportsmanship, and pride for every adaptive field hockey athlete.

Every time you celebrate a personal success, big or small, you help create a space where athletes of all abilities grow in confidence, teamwork, independence, and love for the game. Together, we carry forward field hockey as a sport for all and a sport for life.

In All Starz, success isn’t just the final score — it’s the courage to show up, compete, learn, and try again. Winning and losing both teach resilience, self-worth, and dignity. Great sport parents focus on the process and the joy of playing. Be that parent who cheers for the effort, the teamwork, and the smiles — for the love of play and the joy of watching your athlete grow.

Umpires

Umpires: Guiding the Game with Heart and Skill

Knowledgeable, compassionate umpires are essential to the success of adaptive field hockey. In All Starz, officials do more than enforce rules — they help create an environment where athletes with developmental and intellectual disabilities can safely learn, grow, and compete with confidence.

Adaptive officiating calls for awareness, empathy, and a strong understanding of ability-based play. Our umpires model patience, consistency, and fairness while promoting accountability and respect for everyone on the field. By focusing on what athletes can do and meeting each player where they are, umpires elevate the entire experience — making sure every whistle supports learning, safety, and inclusion.

Start Where You Are. Grow as Far as You Want.
Whether you’re brand new to officiating or have years of experience, USA Field Hockey offers a pathway to grow in adaptive field hockey. While on-demand training is in development, interested umpires are encouraged to reach out to learn more about local opportunities, mentorship, and how to get involved with All Starz.

Join us in shaping a future where every athlete, regardless of ability, has the chance to play, belong, and thrive.

ALL STARZ COACHES

Coaches: Leading with Heart, Creating Belonging

In adaptive field hockey, coaches are more than teachers of the game — they are architects of inclusion. From first-time volunteers to seasoned leaders, adaptive coaches create spaces where athletes with developmental and intellectual disabilities can discover their strengths, build confidence, and experience the joy of being part of a team.

The most powerful tools in an adaptive coach’s playbook aren’t just drills or tactics — they’re patience, empathy, creativity, and a genuine belief in every athlete’s capacity to learn and grow. Presuming competence means seeing beyond challenges and focusing on each player’s abilities and potential. It’s about meeting athletes where they are, allowing time to process and practice, and celebrating every success, big or small.

USA Field Hockey is proud to support coaches who are redefining what it means to lead with heart. Through education, shared resources, and a growing network of adaptive coaches, we’re working to make field hockey a place where every player is seen, supported, and valued.

Great coaches shape great experiences. Adaptive field hockey coaches shape something even greater — belonging. Together, we’re building a game where every athlete can play, grow, and thrive.

Clubs: Expanding the Game for Every Body

Clubs are at the heart of growing adaptive field hockey. By opening doors to athletes with developmental and intellectual disabilities, clubs help create local communities where athletes can learn, compete, and thrive under the All Starz banner.

USA Field Hockey encourages clubs and coaches across the country to expand their programming to include adaptive opportunities. This can mean integrating adaptive training sessions, hosting inclusive clinics, or forming dedicated All Starz teams. When clubs make space for adaptive athletes, field hockey truly becomes a sport for every body — a place where all athletes can play, belong, and shine.

Educators, PE & MSO

Educators, PE Teachers & Program Leaders: You Are the Game Changers

You may not always think of yourself as a coach — but you are often the first person to open the door to sport for athletes of all abilities.

Educators, physical education teachers, and community program leaders play a vital role in introducing adaptive field hockey to children and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Your willingness to adapt activities, foster inclusion, and celebrate progress helps athletes discover their strengths and experience the joy of being part of a team.

Through USA Field Hockey’s All Starz program, we’re building tools and resources that make bringing adaptive field hockey to your setting simple, safe, and fun. From modified practice plans and inclusive PE activities to low-cost adaptive equipment bundles, our goal is to support you in offering meaningful, developmentally appropriate experiences for every participant.

You don’t need to be an expert — you just need an open mind and a commitment to inclusion. USA Field Hockey encourages schools, recreation departments, and multi-sport organizations to add adaptive opportunities within their programs, helping make field hockey truly a sport for every body.

Together, we can grow the game — one classroom, gym, playground, and community at a time.

Local Leaders, Volunteers

Local Leaders & Volunteers: Adaptive Field Hockey Needs You

Behind every successful All Starz program is a team of passionate people — local leaders and volunteers who believe in the power of sport to connect communities and empower athletes of all abilities.

Whether you’re a parent, educator, coach, or community organizer, there’s a place for you in adaptive field hockey. Your involvement helps create safe, joyful spaces where athletes with developmental and intellectual disabilities can learn, play, and thrive.

  • Organizers to plan inclusive clinics and community events

No field hockey or adaptive sport experience? No problem. We provide guidance, resources, and a growing national network to help you get started and feel confident.

Your time, patience, and energy can make a lasting impact. Join us in building something bigger — one athlete, one game, and one inclusive community at a time.
